Hi Everyone-

The first JWM Healthy Food Challenge is slowly winding down. Yoga is up next! I hope you’ve enjoyed this nutritious journey and will continue it on your own; the information we’ve been through is always accessible for review on my food channel.

Washington DC’s conservative restaurants are in the days of yore. While much-loved establishments such as Old Ebbitt Grill and The Palm still stand strong to satiate nostalgia, a crop of modern hip restaurants are popular haunts of today. The architecturally savvy spaces teem with youthful energy and are abuzz with chatter. Patrons leave their ties and suits at home and float through doors and dining rooms in chic garb. Have your Schazm ready to record the pop, electronica, and rock tunes that resound throughout the dimly lit joints. The food scene in DC has become innovative, fun, and frankly, excellent. As never before, I’m finally able to view DC through hungry eyes. The best restaurants in DC can satisfy any food connoisseur from the vegan to the carnivore. Continue reading

You never know what you’re eating when you go out to restaurants or order in food. It’s commonly known that restaurants over use butter, salt, sauces, salad dressings, and other unhealthy ingredients to enhance the flavor of their dishes. Continue reading

Istanbul Airport

Did you know that you can look up what food will be available to you at any airport? Well, you can. If you’re not going to bring your own healthy food with you for air travel, then check in advance to plan where you can find it (it won’t be on the plane).

All you have to do is google the name of the airport to which you are going and food: i.e. “JFK Airport Food,” or “Vancouver Airport Food” and you will get a list of what’s available. The Airports categorize by terminal, food type (restaurant, coffee bar, fast food), and provide floor and gate locations. Make your travel happy and healthy. A little work can make for a longer life. Vegan Yogi Delights

Many yogis love vegan food; all you need to do is Vegan Yogi Delights

Many yogis love vegan food; all you need to do is step into Jivamukti cafe to see them gather. If you think you vegan food is gross, I challenge you to allow yourself the opportunity to change your mind. How? Find the best vegan restaurant in your area and give it a shot. Go with a non-vegan who loves vegan food (me for example) because that person should be able to guide you to order that which will be most to your liking. When I take people who aren’t vegan to my favorite vegan restaurants or make them a vegan meal, they end up surprised by how yummy these meals actually are.step into Jivamukti cafe to see them gather. If you think you vegan food is gross, find the best vegan restaurant around and give it a shot. If it doesn’t go well, try again, but go with a non-vegan who loves vegan food (me for example) because that person might be able to guide you to order that which will be most palatable, even amazing to you. When I take people who are vegan to my favorite vegan restaurants or make them a vegan meal, they end up pleasantly surprised by how yummy these meals can be. Continue reading

Start your own healthy cookbook.

When you find, are given, or concoct your own delicious healthy recipes you love, write them down. Buy a personal cookbook this week and enter three recipes into it for the rest of this month’s challenge (then continue on). Having your own personal cookbook will help to you to make quick decisions about meals you should eat. The process of having to choose and decide from infinite possibilities in and of itself can easily wreck your healthy food lifestyle. Continue reading

Healthy Food Tip #11: Commit To Trying And Trying To Like 1 New Healthy Food A Week For The Next Few Weeks

Commit to trying and trying to like one new healthy food a week for the next few weeks.

As you add healthier foods into your diet, you will notice that you will develop a greater penchant for unfamiliar or previously unappealing items. Why? Our palates adapt to that which they are served and to that which they are not (you may have heard that when we eliminate sugar from our diets we stop craving it). As you incorporate novel and healthier foods into your diet, you will likely feel and look better. You might even find that you’re spontaneously losing weight without even thinking about it–hopefully your new healthy foods will replace some of the bad stuff as you exchange meat and simple carbs with legumes, veggie proteins, grains. Healthy Food Tip #7: Nix Brunch

Brunch is an excuse to go calorie crazy and eat foods that don’t belong in your diet. It’s lovely to share meals with friends and family on weekends, but when you do, stick to your schedule and healthy food choices. Eat breakfast and lunch at your normal times and eat as you usually would (an occasional deviation is cool). Weekly brunches might be the reason pounds creep up on you or you can’t seem to lose the few you’re hoping to. Continue reading

Generally, I try to avoid eating leftovers, but sometimes they make life easier. It’s okay to eat leftovers if the food freezes well and is healthy. You might need or want to make additional foods to complete your meal. Below is an example of how I might throw together a healthy dinner of leftovers. Continue reading

Don’t fall for office food traps, or for that matter, any of the various corporate diet disaster situations.

You know what you need to eat and have the discipline to ignore anything outside the scope of what belongs in your body. Forget about what’s circulating around you in the office, what’s in your company’s kitchen or vending machine, what your colleagues are eating, whose birthday people are celebrating, whether you’re at a breakfast, lunch, or dinner meeting, or attending a conference.
