Julie Wilcox in Reverse Warrior, Crescent Pose

Today The Julie Wilcox Method brings you a third morning yoga video for your library. This yoga video is targeted to intermediate and strong intermediate yoga students. It is 35-minutes long. For any intermediate or advanced yoga practice, you must make sure to properly warm up your body, which is very difficult to do in less than 35-minutes. If all you can do is a super quick morning yoga practice, please stay safe and simple and do Morning Yoga Practice Video 1 or Morning Yoga Practice Video 2, which are not as demanding as is this yoga video and are for all levels. Have a safe and enjoyable practice! Below are some photos from the video. Continue reading

This is a nice article about yoga and sleep, better known as yoga nidra. I’ve taught and written about yoga nidra, and practice it myself several times a week. The best book on the yoga nidra technique is one by the Bihar School Of Yoga. If you have trouble sleeping and are seeking to improve your sleep through yoga, buy the book or find and teacher who knows how to teach it. Then, get started. Yoga and sleep are a power pair that can bring about vast life changes. Read the articles here. Continue reading

Upavista Konasana

I sat in Virasana and Upavista Konasana during a meeting for about 10- minutes each. I lay on the grass and felt the balmy breeze of NYC’s East River blowing over me. I watched my breath and did some nidra. Does any of this qualify as “a yoga practice?” Continue reading

New York Fashion Week is underway and abuzz. That said, it’s time to take a look at some of my favorite fall yoga clothing for women and men. Continue reading

Top Yoga Retreats, Best Fitness Retreats, And Great Detox Centers To Which You Can Escape This Fall

Yoga Retreat, Fitness Retreat, Detox Center, Cleansing Programs

This morning a client of mine asked me when I was leading my next yoga retreat. My answer, “I don’t have one planned!” Though the idea of going away on a fall retreat might seem crazy when we’re supposed to be ramping things up at work, kids are in school, and social engagements could fill up a year’s worth of time in just one week, it’s actually not a bad idea to take off in the midst of the mayhem. In fact, going away and taking care of yourself will likely allow you to be more effective in all that you do. You cannot imagine the plethora of retreats waiting for your bite (and perhaps I’ll plan a yoga one soon)! Here are a few fall retreats I would go on myself: Continue reading

Julie Wilcox Recommended Yoga Books I

Clients, fellow teachers, teacher trainees, and group class/workshop students often ask me what yoga books I like and recommend that they read to learn more about the many dimensions of yoga. I read a lot and use certain books as constant references. In this post, I share with you a few important texts that will give you a solid introduction to the history of yoga, yoga philosophy, yoga anatomy, yoga asana, and yoga breathing. Some are classics and certainly my favorites, but I am also providing a variety of non-classics for different types of reads. This is likely the first of several posts I will do on this topic. These books are a section of my library, which of course as all libraries do, continuously grows. I hope you enjoy and if you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask. Continue reading

How Many Calories Do We Burn Through Cardio, Sports, and Yoga?

Tae Kwon Do

Do you often wonder exactly how many calories you burn while executing different cardio workouts and sports? I do. How about calories burned with yoga? Two weeks ago I had a discussion with another yoga teacher/friend about how many calories people burn doing yoga, and he thought many more than I did. It turns out we were both right. The number of calories we burn during any cardio or yoga workout, depends on many different factors such as gender, body weight, heart rate, intensity of the workout, the ratio of lean muscle to body fat for any given individual, and in the case of yoga, what kind of yoga we are doing—Vinyasa? Slow Flow? Power? Ashtanga? Bikram? Restorative? Yin? Continue reading
